| Chevrolet Corvette
The Chevrolet Corvette is one
of the longest surviving car names still in
production. The Corvette was created in the early
1950's as soldiers returned to the United States with sports cars
brought in Europe. The concept Corvette had a futuristic looking
fiberglass body powered by a Blue Flame inline 6 cylinder engine
borrowed from a truck and a two speed powerglide
transmission. Brakes were stock Chevrolet drum brakes.
When it first appeared, the
Corvette was unpopular due to the fact that the only transmission
was the two speed
powerglide automatic transmission, braking performance was poor
as was straight line performance. As the Corvette was about to be
shelved, the Ford Thunderbird was introduced and not wanting to be
left behind, Chevrolet installed a V-8 engine with
a 3-speed Manual
transmission. The V-8 drive train instantly caused the Corvette to
become successful as it evolved each new Generation.
The Corvette
is currently at it's 6th Generation C6 model range toping out at the Corvette ZR1 is the highest performing
Corvette with an 6th generation LS9 supercharged V8 engine
producing an incredible 638 hp making the ZR1 the first Corvette to have
an top speed 326km/h (204mph) and is able to hit 96km/h (60mph)
in 3.4seconds. The Carbon-Ceramic brakes are identical to the ones
found in the Ferrari FXX and the Bugatti Veyron. All
this performance comes at an reasonable $100,000US.
